My Personal Reiki Journey: From Seeking Healing to Teaching It

reiki Feb 19, 2025

I never expected Reiki to become such a profound part of my life. I didn’t grow up with energy healing or spiritual teachings—I was deeply rooted in science, studying nursing and nutrition, always looking for tangible ways to support health and healing. But life has a way of guiding us exactly where we need to be, even if we don’t realize it at the time.

My first introduction to Reiki was through Kevin, a hospice patient I cared for when I was fresh out of nursing school. I had taken on the role of a home health aide, and one of my tasks was driving Kevin to his weekly Reiki sessions. At the time, I didn’t know what Reiki was—I just knew that every week, like clockwork, something shifted in Kevin after his sessions.

He was lighter, more talkative, in less pain. It was as if Reiki lifted the weight of his illness off his shoulders, even if only temporarily. One day, I finally asked him about it. He laughed and said he used to think it was “mumbo jumbo” too, until he felt the relief in his own body. That conversation planted a seed in me, one I wouldn’t even realize was growing until years later.

Kevin passed away around Valentine’s Day in 2015, and though I never forgot how Reiki had supported him, I never imagined I’d be seeking it out for my own family.

Reiki Found Me When I Needed It Most

Fast forward to 2019. My husband Glenn and I had just received the most devastating news a parent could hear—our daughter Luna had been diagnosed with a terminal brain condition.

For two weeks, we sat in the rawness of that reality, waiting for hospice to arrive, waiting for death to come. But it never did. Luna, in her own magical way, kept holding on. And I knew in my bones that I couldn’t just wait for her to die—I had to fight for her, in whatever way I could.

I started searching for healing modalities beyond conventional medicine. I wanted people who wouldn’t see my daughter as a lost cause, but as the radiant soul she was—a child still full of life. And that’s when I remembered Kevin. That’s when I remembered Reiki.

A quick search led me to Lyn, a local Reiki Master. The moment I landed on her website, I felt something in me shift. I hadn’t even met her yet, but I knew she was meant to be part of our journey.

When we finally met Lyn in person, she confirmed what I had already felt—Reiki wasn’t just for Luna. It was for all of us. Glenn and I needed healing just as much as she did. Lyn saw us as a family unit, as an interconnected energy field, and she knew that our healing was just as vital as our daughter’s.

So, week after week, we committed to Reiki.

Some of our sessions with Lyn were hours long, where we’d sink into deep meditative states, experiencing moments of clarity, connection, and healing that felt almost otherworldly. Through Reiki, I felt more connected to Luna’s higher self, to my own guides, to the bigger picture of life and death. It carried us through the grief in ways I cannot fully put into words.

I truly believe that without Reiki, I don’t know how we would have made it through those years.

Stepping Into My Own Reiki Path

When we moved back to Las Vegas, we searched for another Reiki practitioner, but no one quite matched the depth of what we had experienced with Lyn. We found ourselves unable to afford the high costs of in-home Reiki sessions, and I quickly realized something—Reiki had to come through me now.

This wasn’t just something I could outsource anymore. It was time for me to become the channel, to learn this healing modality for myself and my family.

In 2019, I became a Level II Usui Reiki Practitioner, with a kind and patient Reiki Master named Sheila who came to our home to teach and attune us. Luna was present for the attunement, making her a Reiki conduit as well.

In 2020, I completed my Reiki Master training, and by the end of that year, I knew one thing with absolute certainty—I wasn’t just meant to practice Reiki. I was meant to teach it.

Why I Teach Reiki Now

Reiki came into my life at two of the most pivotal moments—first, through Kevin, when I wasn’t yet ready to receive it. And then, through Luna, when I had no choice but to receive it. It held me, carried me, and expanded me in ways I never imagined.

And now, I teach Reiki because I know what it’s like to feel powerless in the face of illness, grief, and uncertainty. I know what it’s like to search for something—anything—that can help when conventional medicine has no more answers.

I teach Reiki because I believe every person should have access to this powerful healing tool—to use on themselves, their loved ones, their children, and even their homes and environments.

Reiki isn’t just a practice. It’s a remembering. It reminds us that we are energy beings first. It reconnects us to our intuition, our higher selves, and the deep wisdom within our bodies.

As a Reiki Master Teacher, I now guide others on their own Reiki journeys, helping them learn how to channel this life-force energy for themselves and those around them. Whether you’re a mother wanting to support your child, an empath looking for energetic protection, or someone simply seeking a deeper connection to themselves—Reiki is for you.

If you feel called to learn, I invite you to step into this journey with me. Let’s awaken the healer within you.

With love,
Robyn
